Cut & Thrust Sword

Often considered the perfect balance between a stout arming sword and the finesse of a rapier, cut and thrust swords generally featured Renaissance styled hilts with a thicker blade similar to the arming sword. These nimble swords were quick to thrust like the rapier while possessing the strength of the classic medieval sword for cutting and were popular side arms during the 16th and 17th centuries.

Carried by the Munich Town Guard

There are several of these swords in different private and public collections, one in the Wallace Collection and several at the Bavarian National Museum. It's a perfect example of a German military cut-and-thrust swept hilt carried by the Munich Town Guard. The slightly shorter blade and stout hilt were perfect for breaking up a street fight or tavern brawl, as the town guard was often employed to do, and was clearly intended for practical use. One of the most practical and prolific swords we have ever offered. Has a well-tempered sharpened 1080 high carbon steel blade. The pommel and guard are steel and the grip is wood wrapped in twisted steel wire for a very positive hold.

"First a few measurements: Mine weighs 3 lb, 2 oz or 1.42 kg. This is still a bit heavy but within the specification range. Distal taper: at the Guard - 4.5mm; 25cm from guard - 3.9 mm; 50 cm from guard - 3.7 mm; 75 cm from guard (1 cm from tip) - 2.45 mm. This is the best I could get with my Mastercraft digital caliper. I do not know if that is enough but it is what I measured. I have done no cutting with this yet but it feels like it will do whatever I want it to. After all the reviews and weight complaints I was expecting a project sword but it feels perfect: balanced; weighty but not heavy; nimble at the tip; firm in the hand. Instead of full disassemble, grind and re-assemble all it needs is a little touch up around the hilt. Some of the welds are poor and rough and there is pitting here and there. Strangely some of the structure of the complex hilt is thin, nice oval cross-section whereas some of it is thick, square and heavy. So I think all it needs is some "dremel work" to shape the square chunks, tidy up the welds, do something with the few pits and perhaps shave off the sides of the pommel. The real problem with the guard is rough, square "hot spots" around the finger rings which need to be smoothed and perhaps wrapped with leather. In addition the knuckle of my index finger hits second side ring sometimes - it needs to be bent out some how - and the knuckle bow needs to be lifted outward because my hand hits that as well. So a few modifications but far less work than I was anticipating. And SHARP! My Diavolo Main Gauche from ********* is so poorly sharpened it cannot even cut para-cord. Excellent sharpening from Reliks. So I am very happy ... no, delighted actually. I got a better sword that I was expecting, less of a project than I expected, within a reasonable weight range, excellent balance and a great combination of nimble in the tip and weighty in the hand. The Scabbard fit tightly and is loosening up nicely. No flaws I could find except the rough welds and pitting mentioned above. For the price and what it is I enthusiastically give it a full 5 stars. "
