The Side Sword was a military sword of the 16th and 17th century Renaissance period that also achieved popularity among civilians, due to its relatively light weight and quickness. It also had an advantage over its contemporary, the rapier, in having the ability to cut efficiently as well as thrust. Based on an original German sword of this type, this sword is well balanced an feels exceptional in the hand. The “swept” hilt affords excellent hand protection and the blade geometry makes for outstanding performance in both the cut and the thrust.

"Very well made attractive Side Sword which has a good cutting blade using a Rapier Like complex hilt. Out of the box the edges where at least paper cutting sharp, maybe just a little rough in spots, but became much sharper with light use of a hand held diamond hone. A casual cutting test agains the cardboard shipping box cut the box almost in half with little effort. The blade is flexible but not whippy so that it could thrust easily. Hilt, handle and blade are solidly fitted with no looseness, scabbard also has a good firm but not over-tight or not over loose fit Balance and handling is light and fast but still with enough blade presence for effective cutting, now this isn't a sabre but it is a good balance of cutting and thrusting typical of a Side Sword.
