What is the difference between Iaido and Iaito?

How is an Iaito sword different than a Katana?

An Iaito sword is very similar to the katana in size, weight and construction. The katana has a very sharp edge meant for cutting targets where Iaito do not have sharp edges as they not made to cut. Iaito are also sometimes made with low maintenance stainless steels and alloys which are not suitable for katana.

What is an “Iaido Safe Edge”?

The Iaido safe edge is a service performed at Reliks.com on a katana blade. We modify the katana blade, remove the edge, lightly round the tip and buff all former edges clean and smooth so they can not cut. This is done to make the katana safe for Iaido and kata.
