Inspired by the Blades of 17th-Century Pirates and Sailors
The cutlass may be forever associated with pirates, but pirates didn’t invent it. During the 17th and early 18th centuries, short hangers and related swords were already popular among European sailors, privateers, and other seafarers. Known variously as hangers, cuttoes, short sabres, and eventually cutlasses, these compact blades were well suited to life aboard a ship.
Pirates naturally adopted the same practical style of sword. Compared with longer swords, a short, powerful blade was easier to manage among crowded decks, rigging, narrow passageways, and the general chaos of a boarding action. Substantial guards offered additional protection for the hand, while the compact blade remained quick and maneuverable at close quarters.
Historical maritime swords varied considerably, with different blade shapes, guards, and regional styles appearing throughout the period. There was no single universal "pirate cutlass," but over time the short sailor’s sword became so closely associated with piracy that its curved blade and protective guard became enduring symbols of the Golden Age of Piracy.
