The Askeaton Early Viking Sword is built for speed, control, and historical character, offering collectors and practitioners a rare look at an early Viking combat blade. Developed by Matt Easton in collaboration with Windlass Steelcrafts, this sword captures the agile nature of early Viking warfare. With an exceptionally close balance point just 3/16” from the guard, the sword feels lively in hand and responds instantly, making it ideal for fast cuts, quick recoveries, and precise movements around an opponent’s shield.

Historical Inspiration from County Limerick

This sword is inspired by an original Viking Age weapon discovered near Askeaton in County Limerick and now preserved in the National Museum of Ireland. Classified as a Petersen Type A / Behmer Type VIII, the original reflects an early phase of Viking sword design where comfort and agility were prioritized over mass. One particularly unusual historical detail is the use of decorative spacers between the guard, grip, and pommel, a feature rarely seen on swords from this period and faithfully recreated in this reproduction.

Authentic Construction and Period Details

The hilt is designed for long use, featuring a leather grip finished with a historically accurate wet-wrap process. Fine cord is tightly wrapped over wet leather and removed once dry, leaving subtle dimpling that improves grip and adds visual authenticity. The blade is forged from 1075 high carbon steel, factory sharpened, and peened to the lower section of the two-part pommel, with the upper section riveted in place, following traditional Viking construction methods. While the original sword was found without a scabbard, this reproduction includes a high-quality period-style scabbard with a wooden core, leather wrap, and belt, completing the historical presentation.
