Medieval Knightly Sword

Few sword forms capture the image of the early medieval knight as clearly as the Oakeshott Type X. Broad bladed, strongly fullered and built around an efficient cutting blade, this sword represents an important link between the swords of the Viking Age and those carried by knights during the High Middle Ages.

From Viking Sword to Knightly Sword

Oakeshott Type X swords were used across a long period, with examples dating from roughly the 10th through the 12th centuries and the form continuing into the early 13th century. Their design retains many characteristics associated with earlier Viking Age swords, while the evolving hilt styles increasingly reflect the familiar form of the medieval knightly sword.

The Type X blade is typically broad with relatively little taper for much of its length. One of its most recognizable features is a wide fuller extending along most of the blade. Rather than simply being decorative, the fuller allows material to be removed while maintaining an effective blade structure and reducing unnecessary weight.

Unlike later medieval sword types that increasingly emphasize acute points and thrusting performance, the Type X remains primarily associated with a broad cutting blade. It is this combination of a long fuller, broad profile and simple cruciform hilt that helped establish one of the most enduring silhouettes of the medieval sword.

Classic Medieval Hilt
