Wooden, Metal, Viking Shields, Bucklers Kite Shields
The shield was a protective device against weapons such as the sword, mace and arrows. The Romans carried large rectangular shields that provided great protection but lacked in mobility as the Scottish carried the targe, which was much smaller in size but could be easily maneuvered. During the Middle Ages, diamond shaped shields or kite shields were used to adopt protection while on horseback.
