Ronin Katana

Few stories in Japanese samurai history capture the ideals of loyalty, honour and sacrifice quite like the legendary 47 Ronin. The Hanwei Ronin Katana celebrates their remarkable story with traditional Japanese sword styling, a beautifully folded Swedish powder steel blade and an intricately decorated tsuba that brings this famous tale to life. The story began in 1701 when Lord Asano Naganori attacked the court official Kira Yoshinaka inside Edo Castle after a bitter dispute. Asano was ordered to commit seppuku, his lands were confiscated and his retainers were left masterless. Forty-seven of these ronin, led by Oishi Kuranosuke, secretly planned to avenge their lord. In December 1702, they stormed Kira's residence, killed him and carried his head to Asano's grave at Sengakuji Temple. The ronin were subsequently ordered to commit seppuku, and their graves at Sengakuji remain a place of remembrance. Their story became one of Japan's most enduring accounts of samurai loyalty and duty.

Hanwei honours this legacy with a hand forged and folded Swedish powder steel blade crafted in the traditional shinogi zukuri style. The blade features a hi, or groove, running along its length and a sharpened edge. Its folded steel construction adds visual character to a sword already rich in historical meaning. The blackened iron tsuba is particularly striking, depicting Asano's loyal retainers on their fateful march to Kira's residence.
