Fast, balanced, and battle-ready - Agincourt hand and a half sword

For the reenactor, collector, or practitioner who wants a sword built for speed and real handling, the Agincourt hand and a half sword from Windlass Steelcrafts’ Battlecry line delivers. Slender and quick with a reach that works equally well one-handed or with both hands, this blade rewards technique. It feels at home paired with a buckler or a larger shield and moves with the kind of agility that lets a skilled fighter score cuts and precise thrusts against armoured or unarmoured foes. Arrives ready to use with a matching scabbard, factory edge, and certificate of authenticity signed by the smiths who made it.

History and context

The name Agincourt evokes the famous English victory of October 25, 1415, when English longbowmen and men-at-arms proved decisive on a muddy French field. Hand-and-a-half swords, sometimes called bastard swords, occupy the middle ground between the short arming sword and the larger two-handed war-sword. During the 14th and 15th centuries fighters prized blades that combined reach with speed. A narrower, tapered point suited fighting in or against plate, while the extended grip allowed the wielder to switch between one- and two-handed techniques as the fight required. Techniques such as half-swording—gripping the blade for close work and narrow thrusts—became important parts of the period’s martial repertoire and are a natural match for a blade with the balance and geometry of this model.

Construction, performance, and what makes it excel

This Agincourt model is forged from 1065 high carbon steel and finished with a blued patina to help resist everyday staining and surface rust. The blade is heat treated to a tempered hardness in the low 50s HRC and fitted to an extra-wide tang for durability. Windlass’ hands-on production means each piece is checked, tempered, and ground by smiths experienced in traditional methods. The result is a fast, well balanced blade that ships pre-sharpened and has passed handling tests for both cutting and thrusting. The furniture is robust and authentic in appearance, the grip is a wood core wrapped in leather for positive purchase, and the sword includes a matching scabbard with a belt stop. Also included is custom packaging and a certificate of authenticity signed by the smiths who touched the blade during forging and finishing.

Key attributes to expect are genuine forged and tempered high carbon steel, authentic construction and finishing, a factory edge out of the box, a balance tuned for speed and control, and a supplied frog or hanger for belt carry. If you want a historically inspired hand-and-a-half that is light in the hand but serious in combat potential, this Agincourt sword fits the bill.

"Amazing balance and point control. Solid construction, coolest looking sword. Buy one!"

P Mark P. - Verified Buyer

"Love the sword, but being left-handed, I need a scabbard on my right hip..."

R Lisa R. - Verified Buyer

"Excellent quality for the price, cut inch thick hemp stalks with no warping of the blade or chipping to be seen. The additional scabbard and belt frog was a very nice touch."

K Katherine K. - Verified Buyer

"The sword is in great condition, and handles beautifully. A perfect choice for women or people of smaller stature, as it is light and doesn't need a lot of strength to cut targets. A little discoloration on the pommel where the finish wasn't complete, but only marks the sword as a unique piece that was handcrafted."

B Arnold B. - Verified Buyer

"Well made and finished. The sword fits like it was made for me. The POB is 2.5" from the cross-guard and the leather wrap on the handle is tight and well stitched. The pommel has been peened and is tight. The sheath is made of leather with metal tip and throat. The sheath is NOT wood lined. There is a small scratch down to bare metal on the tip, but it is not a big deal. The frog / suspension is made of quality leather and well stitched and rivited. It is a simple and ingenious design that appears to work well with any belt. Including my military web belt. This is for left hip wear as it is for a right hand draw."
