Scottish Dirk – A Highland Warrior’s Blade

The Scottish Dirk holds a special place in Highland tradition, evolving directly from the Medieval ballock dagger into a form uniquely Scottish. By the late 16th century, this weapon had taken on its own distinct identity—no longer just a derivative of European knives, but a blade born of the Highlands. Unlike later ornamental versions, the early dirks were uncompromising fighting knives, carried proudly alongside a targe or paired with a basket-hilt claymore.

A Blade for Battle

Designed for both offense and defense, the Scottish Dirk was a versatile companion. Its long, single-edged blade could be wielded alone, with a shield, or as a secondary weapon in combination with a sword. These dirks were not ceremonial; they were battlefield tools meant for decisive action, embodying the warrior ethos of the Highlands during the 17th and early 18th centuries.

Authentic Reproduction by Windlass Steelcrafts

This reproduction captures the essence of the early Scottish Dirk, circa 1700. Forged from high-quality steel, the blade is complemented by a carved hardwood grip decorated with an authentic chevron pattern, faithfully copied from surviving originals. Each piece comes complete with a leather scabbard, making it as practical as it is historically accurate. For collectors, reenactors, or anyone passionate about Highland history, this functional dagger is a must-have addition to a serious collection.

"This dirk is gorgeous, I have one made of damascus folded steel that I thought was great until the Early Scottish Dirk from Reliks arrived. I am torn between, I should have had it sharpened, or It is better unsharpened [although the point is very pointy] for display and handling by visitors to our clan tent. I may sharpen it some day, but for now it is a great showpiece and very usable and safe to display with my broadsword and targe."
