The Legendary D-Guard Bowie Knife

Few blades capture the raw spirit of the American Civil War like the D-Guard Bowie Knife. Favored by Confederate soldiers for its rugged versatility, this massive fighting knife could chop branches, split logs, clear saplings, and, when called upon, serve as a fearsome weapon on the battlefield. Today, it remains a favorite among collectors, re-enactors, and outdoorsmen who appreciate its historic roots and all-purpose strength.

A Blade with Civil War History

The D-Guard Bowie became popular in the mid-19th century, particularly in the Confederate South where soldiers needed a reliable tool that doubled as a weapon. Handmade versions of these knives were treasured by cavalrymen and infantry alike, often carried as a secondary arm when traveling light was essential. Its distinctive steel guard—shaped like a “D”—offered excellent hand protection and gave the knife its enduring name. Historical accounts and surviving examples prove its reputation as both a utility blade and a battlefield companion.

Modern Reproduction by Windlass Steelcrafts

This reproduction is forged from high carbon steel, giving it the toughness and edge retention needed for heavy work. The contoured wooden grip with a light stain provides comfort in hand, while the steel guard ensures durability against hard use. Each knife includes a hand-stitched leather sheath with metal fittings, making it ready for display, reenactment, or field use. Arrives sharpened from the factory, just as a soldier would have demanded. A true piece of living history, the D-Guard Bowie is both a collector’s treasure and a functional blade built to last.

"over all good, though the blade had been peened crooked."

"Feel more like a very short cutlass than a knife sized bowie, but very nice. Hilt and guard feel solid on the blade. False edge not sharpened but I can do that myself with my best sander. Even if light in weight it has a lot of blade presence so that it would have a lot of chopping power relative to it's size. Blade finish is smooth with no visible grind marks, but short of a mirror polish, but I prefer satin finishes to mirror finishes, but I don't like over coarse grind marks on some other knives. Final word: I like it."
