A Gentleman’s Blade With Presence

The Lasserre Bowie Knife stands out as one of those rare historic blades that manages to be both imposing and elegant. In early America, finely crafted Bowie knives were more than weapons—they were status symbols. Large, graceful, and intimidating, they were carried by gentlemen who wanted their cutlery to speak of refinement as much as readiness. This impressive replica channels that spirit beautifully, offering collectors and enthusiasts a striking piece with the presence of a true 19th-century showpiece.

Inspired by an Early American Original

This reproduction is based on a remarkable antique Bowie featured on page 115 of The Antique Bowie Knife Book (1990), one of the earliest and most respected references on historic Bowies. The original was the work of a New Orleans cutler and incorporated a distinctive integral finger ring built into its ornate guard. Its handle used ivory slabs secured with silver rivets—materials that spoke to its owner’s wealth and status. To honour the design while keeping it practical for modern collectors, this replica substitutes polished black buffalo horn and nickel-silver hardware. The blade gently swells toward its needle-sharp point, delivering both cutting finesse and chopping authority. The top 5" of the blade is sharpened, just like the original early American masterpiece.

Historically Styled and Ready to Display

This Windlass Steelcrafts reproduction includes faithful details that elevate it beyond a simple replica. The original knife’s owners preserved not only the sheath but also the belt that accompanied it—a rarity among surviving Bowie artifacts. In tribute, this set includes both a period-style black leather sheath and a matching belt sized generously to fit waists from 32" to 49". Beautiful, intimidating, and steeped in American history, this Lasserre Bowie Knife is an exceptional addition to any collection of 19th-century blades. It arrives sharpened from the factory and ready for display.

"Fit and finish couldn't be better, a nice satin finish similar in quality to the finishes on Albion and other high end sword reproductions. The grind lines are flawless on my example with no wavy lines or any irregularities on the bevels. I has a wide fuller terminating in a short diamond shaped tip. The edges are easily thin paper cutting sharp on the main edge and on the false edge, equally sharp for the false edge. It does use a short stub tang with a frame handle that included the frame with the guard as one piece that slides onto the short(ish) stick tang …. This is often mistaken as being a full tang, but the give away is that with the handle dimensions the guard hole is smaller than the widest part of the handle if the knife used a full tang ….. So would be impossible slip over the tang and fit properly at the tang/blade shoulders. This type of tang”handle construction is historically correct, and in period was considered strong enough to make a robust knife, although a true full tang would be stronger. Note: Although modern buyers of knives prefer full tang knives, or as at least worried about stick tangs, one must take note that historical swords, even with very wide blades at the shoulders used narrow tangs and seem when well made in quality reproductions to be very robust ! A true full tang would be stronger but strong enough if not used in an abusive hammer: It is after all designed as a huge Bowie and as a fighting knife, and it's not a bush knife intended to cut down small trees or process wood, but should be strong enough for it's intended use .... Not intended to survive extreme destructive testing ! As a collector's piece it's near perfect."
