The Witham Viking Seax pays tribute to one of the most essential weapons of the Viking Age—the Viking seax knife. Known across the Germanic world as the scramseax (or simply seax), this single-edged blade served as both a warrior’s weapon and a daily tool. Archaeological finds show seaxes in a wide range of sizes—from small utility knives to fearsome long-bladed weapons known as langseax. The seax was more than a tool of survival; it was a symbol of freemen across Norse and Saxon lands and a defining feature of their culture.

Historically, the seax was carried in a horizontal sheath at the front of the belt, always ready for combat or craft. The very word “seax” means “knife,” while “scram” refers to food—making it literally a “food knife.” This everyday practicality, combined with battlefield efficiency, made the seax indispensable to Viking warriors. The Saxons themselves may have taken their name from this blade, just as the Franks were named for their throwing axe, the francisca. This modern reproduction features a 5.5mm thick, 12-inch high carbon steel blade that cuts clean and holds a durable edge. The leather-wrapped handle has been refined with a reduced diameter for a more comfortable grip, while the tang is peened securely over the metal end cap for authenticity and strength. Each seax includes a stitched brown leather scabbard with a belt hanger for traditional carry.
