Castillon Sword

In 1973, a remarkable discovery was made along the banks of the River Dordogne near Castillon in Northern France—over eighty medieval swords were found preserved within a sunken barge. Among them was the inspiration for this Castillon Sword, a striking example of the 15th century hand and a half sword. Each blade, forged in an age of chivalric warfare and knightly honor, offered a tangible link to the soldiers who fought in the final battles of the Hundred Years’ War.

A Weapon of Transition and Precision

Classified by Ewart Oakeshott as a Type XV.8, the Castillon sword bridges the late medieval shift from broad cutting blades to weapons designed for thrusting against plate armor. Dated between c.1420 and 1450, its diamond cross-section blade tapers cleanly to an acute point, ideal for piercing the gaps in a knight’s harness. Many swords of this type earned the name “bastard sword” or “hand-and-a-half sword” for their versatile grip—allowing both single and two-handed use. The blade bears a boldly struck smith’s mark, a hallmark of pride and craftsmanship that echoed through late medieval Europe.
