Medieval Steel Buckler Shield

As Europe transitioned from the Middle Ages into the Renaissance, the heavy wooden shields of earlier centuries gave way to more compact and durable steel bucklers. Favored by soldiers and mercenaries alike, this small round shield was prized for its maneuverability, strength, and effectiveness in close combat. Quick to raise and easy to control, it offered protection while allowing the fighter to remain mobile on the battlefield.

A Shield for Speed and Defense

The buckler became a trusted companion for infantrymen, particularly mercenaries tasked with breaking through lines of pikemen or engaging in fast, close-quarters fighting. Unlike larger shields that could slow movement, the buckler provided just enough coverage while keeping the sword hand free for offense. Its popularity spanned centuries, remaining a common defensive tool from the 13th through the 17th century.

Authentic Reproduction by Windlass Steelcrafts

This functional reproduction is crafted by Windlass Steelcrafts from 18-gauge steel, true to period construction. The domed round shield is equipped with sturdy leather grips, making it practical for use in training, reenactments, or as a display piece in any medieval collection. Compact, reliable, and historically accurate, this steel buckler is an excellent choice for enthusiasts of medieval arms and armor.

"Being made from 18 gauge (not 16 gauge) steel, it isn't as strong as I would have hoped. It does it's job admirably however, but if you fight hard the shield will dent and bend."

Response: Information has been updated to reflect the manufacturing change.

"nice, little weight but rugged "

"With the exception of a rather rude revelation that, with a shield on my forearm, something arrives at my face about a foot sooner than it does otherwise, it's great. It looks good on the wall, feels good in my hands, and hopefully will serve me well. (I am looking into historical fencing) I do have a minor problem with my forearm being a little too snug in the larger arm loop, but I don't think you could change that without making it too loose for others. It's a beautiful shield and well worth the price I think. If I had to change any one thing, I would probably go for a steel and wood hand grip, with the leather arm loop adjustable by buckle. "

"The metal is good on the shield, but it is painted black on the inside. The straps aren't great but it's easy to replace them with better quality ones."

D Collin D. - Verified Buyer

"Very good. Padding might be a suggestion for the manufacturer."
