the askeaton early viking sword

Developed by Matt Easton and Windlass Steelcrafts, this sword is heavily inspired by the original that rests in the National Museum of Ireland, and was discovered near Askeaton in County Limerick.

askeaton viking sword scabbard

The original has no scabbard, but this reproduction is provided with a high quality period design crafted with a wood core and wrapped in leather and includes a belt.

askeaton viking sword pommel

Constructed like many Viking swords, the blade is peened to the lower section of the 2-part pommel and the upper section is riveted on.

askeaton viking sword hilt

Interestingly, the hilt has a feature rarely seen on swords from this era - decorative spacers between the grip, pommel and guard.

The balance point is only 3/16” from the guard, making his sword extremely quick and responsive, designed to dart around enemy shields. The grip features leather that is dimpled using a historically authentic "wet-wrap" process, during which fine cord is tightly wrapped around a wet leather grip.
