The Kumo Katana

The Kumo katana is a gorgeous sensei or master grade katana. This expert katana is hand made by the most experienced master sword smiths at the Skyjiro Forge. These are made for martial artists that are looking for a high end katana with everything that it has to offer including premium finishing materials, precise handling and traditional blade production with the benefit of modern metallurgy and steels free from the impurities that sword smiths had to contend with hundreds of years ago. These are befitting of a Sensei or master swordsman and can be equally enjoyed by a collector of fine swords.

Premium Materials

The Kumo is not just expertly produced it is built with some of the finest materials available for the katana. This starts from the soul of the sword, the blade itself. Many swords come from stock billets of steel that are available in any steel market that can be used to forge some quality swords but what sets SkyJiro apart is they use their own proprietary blend of .7% carbon content sword steel that was developed and smelted for the sole purpose of sword production. They didn't stop at the blade either. Instead of using standard steel, iron or blended alloys to produce the furnishings they chose to make them from a pure white bronze. The handle is wrapped with a premium grade Japanese silk which produces an unmistakable authentic feel that no other material can quite replicate. The same-gawa is “first choice” selected for a sword of this level as well as specially aged hardwoods are used for the tsuka, mekugi and saya.

An Extension of the Samurai

A proper katana should not only be capable of heavy cutting, it should also balance properly and instead of feeling like a tool it needs to feel as though it is an extension of the wielder themselves. Special attention has been made to these details and were achieved by masterful design and careful selection of materials to manage the weight and balance perfectly.

Traditional Construction

The blade is forge in a traditional Kobuse construction method which means it starts with an iron core and then is wrapped with SF's proprietary blend of folded high carbon steel. The final result is a 6700 layer katana with iron core and expert differential temper. The hardened edge has superior retention and the softened spine alleviates blade stress during a cut. This technique is difficult to master but when performed by top forges and finished with a traditional Japanese finger stone polish, you end up with an exceptional sword like the Kumo katana. The Kumo or Cloud katana includes a certificate of authenticity from SkyJiro forge and can also be authenticated by the forges signature in the blades tang (Nakago).
