The Paul Chen Koi Katana features a hand-forged T10 high-carbon steel blade, differentially hardened using the traditional clay application method. This process produces a hardened cutting edge and a softer, more resilient spine while creating the distinctive hamon associated with traditionally styled Japanese swords. The generous 14 3/4 inch tsuka is wrapped in premium white Japanese cotton tsuka-ito over black same, creating a dramatic contrast that continues throughout the sword's fittings.

At the centre of the design is a beautifully detailed black iron koi tsuba, featuring a sculpted fish with carefully rendered detail on both sides. The antiqued fittings complement the traditional appearance, while the deep black lacquered saya is finished with a black and white striped cotton sageo.
