Relatively short, lightweight swords were carried when traveling either in the countryside or town all through history. But when one was going to battle, or embarking on a journey where combat was likely, the Sword of War was carried. This was not a small weapon, and although it could be worn on the hip (many period illustrations show this) it was often carried on the horse. This is a large sword weighing in at 4 lbs; it required a strong man to use it. A strong man could swing it with one hand, while holding his shield in his other. But should he lose his shield, both hands were used to swing the sword for lightning quick blows. The damage of which it was capable was awesome. This sword is representative of the whole type of swords of war. Grip is wood, wrapped with leather. Pommel and guard is steel, with brass rings on the grip. Scabbard is leather with brass furniture. A beautiful and impressive functional sword. Overall-50 1/4" * Blade-39" long, 1 7/8" wide * Wt. 4 lbs.
