Cutlass, Hanger and Cuttoe

The cutlass, sword of the seas favoured by navy and pirates alike, was also used by some land infantry units but is best remembered as a sailor's sword. The cutlass was a shorter sword frequently used by officers as a close quarters battle weapon and may be known by some as a cuttoe which is derived from the french “couteau”. It was also referred to as a “hanger” until the 1800's, then adopted the name cutlass amongst sailors.

Sea Worthy Sword

This reproduction sword is hand forged with a tough, tempered high carbon steel blade which is as battle ready as the originals. The hilt has a solid brass heart shaped guard which is characteristic of the period. The scabbard is made from a sturdy leather completed with brass throat and tip. Made to the same specifications by professional sword smiths these swords rival the original produced for government defence contracts around the world.

"Though not tested in battle, the functional cutlass I purchased as a graduation gift for a friend who was getting her second masters looks awesome. I like to know the metallurgical properties of the sword I bought as well as the qualities of the swords of the time. Love it love it love it. I was told it was the most thoughtful gift she had ever recieved. I hope it serves her well."
