Ball Headed Replica with Spike and Wood Grain Finish

For collectors, re-enactors, and fans of Indigenous weaponry, the Indian War Club is a commanding addition to any collection. Cold Steel’s reproduction captures the brutal elegance of the classic ball headed club while using modern materials that stand up to handling and display. With an honest, museum friendly silhouette and a rugged wood grain finish, this club gives you the look and heft of a true fighting tool without the long term care wooden examples demand.

Origins and historical use

No single origin date is known for the ball headed war club, but archaeological and historical sources place it in common use by the early 16th century. It was especially favoured by warlike peoples of the eastern seaboard and later spread into the Great Lakes, northern Canada, and the Great Plains. The best examples were carved from a naturally curved root burl, sapling or branch so the grain flowed from handle into head. That continuous grain greatly reduced the risk of catastrophic failure under impact. Hornbeam or ironwood was prized for its density and shock resistance. In combat a well delivered blow from the ball could break a limb or crush a skull. Many clubs were further enhanced with antler, bone, knapped stone, or iron spikes to increase penetration and shock.

Design details and why this version matters

Cold Steel worked with custom bladesmith Rich McDonald to reproduce the important visual and functional cues of the traditional ball headed club. Our version measures roughly two feet long with a 3.25 inch diameter ball and is fitted with a short steel spike for authentic profile and added impact realism. Because genuine hornbeam is scarce in commercial quantities we cast this club from black injection molded polypropylene. The material is practically unbreakable and will not rot, crack, warp, splinter, swell, shrink, mildew, or fade. For living history use the textured wood grain surface accepts paint easily and can be ornamented with brass studs, tacks, or feathers. The result is a durable, low maintenance reproduction that preserves the spirit and mechanics of the original while offering long term reliability for display, training, or demonstration.

"Excellent trainer"

"Very solid, near indestructible, is actually good to exercise the wrist like Indian Clubs as a side benefit. This is my second one, the first I sawed of the spike to a small nub to match the earlier version of the Cold Steel Indian War Club, with this one I'm leaving the spike intact so that I have now both versions: As a Zombie fantasy weapon the full spike might be better one on one with a zombie, but the short nub version lest likely to get stuck in the first zombie for a few critical seconds if one had to deal with many zombies. In the real world it's a nice toy."

"Very fun to handle and swing around, the metal spike on this version is rather aggressive so this is not a training weapons. It's very forward balanced but this is what one expects from a War Club. Not a toy, so it has to be taken seriously even if one can play with it, it is also very good to exercise the wrist. I preferred the earlier ColdSteel version that only had a short metal cylinder rather than a full spike so I reworked it with my dremel with a cut off wheel."
