As armor became stronger, the hand-and-a-half sword became more popular. A development of the old "great sword", the hand-and-a-half was a one-handed weapon that provided a grip long enough for a two-hand hold. Many were made so large that they really needed two hands, but this sword is a good example of a true hand-and-a-half. Copied from a German sword, this beautiful weapon weighs in at 3 1/2 lbs. (actually less than some basket hilts). It excelled when used afoot. Blade is flat in cross-section, with three narrow fullers. The flat blade accomodated parrying moves against an opponent's blade, helped by side rings that prevented catastrophic cuts to the hand. Grip is wood, covered with leather, blade is tough, tempered high carbon steel. Nicely shaped steel pommel and crossguard. Forged by Windlass Steelcrafts. This functional sword has an overall- 47 3/4" * Blade- 38" long, 1 7/8" wide. * A photo of the original can be seen in "Edged Weapons" by Frederick Wilkinson.
