In the front of Stirling Castle is a statue of Robert The Bruce, King of Scotland. It was Robert The Bruce who defeated the English at Bannockburn. It was at this fateful battle that one of history's more dramatic encounters occurred. The Bruce was riding a palfrey, (and lightly armored) reconnoitering the English lines when DeBohun, an English knight, saw him. DeBohun, in full armor and riding a warhorse, attacked. Robert The Bruce saw him, skillfully avoided the lance, then rose in his stirrups and struck DeBohun's helmet a powerful blow with his axe. The blow to the helmet was so great that DeBohun was killed immediately, and the axe shaft was also broken. No one knows what this axe was like, but this is a copy of one that the statue of Robert The Bruce holds. It is a mighty axe, with a high carbon steel head and a hardwood shaft. The shaft also has tacks on the side to improve the grip. Circa 1300. Overall-24", Blade-4 1/2" cutting head, Wt-1lb 8 oz
