Throughout time the Irish have lived as proud people. The Irish Celts had knowledge of iron working long before other related cultures such as Britain and Scotland. With this knowledge, they came to power in these places and remained in power until the coming of the Roman legions although it never had an outpost in Ireland due to the ferocity of the Irish Sea. Also the Romans were a superstitious lot. They had heard stories of the magic that was practiced in Ireland and were afraid of it. The Irish Celts on the other hand remained fairly isolated until the raids of the Vikings. The kings of Ireland, busy warring among themselves for power or land, ultimately were the cause of the Vikings' great successes in Ireland, and the rivalry of the small Irish kingdoms ensured the Celts' downfall.
