In the late 15th and early 16th centuries, few Swedish nobles were as influential or as controversial as Svante Nilsson. Nilsson was a member of the Privy Council of Sweden, a group of royal advisors well-entrenched in the political mires of Sweden at the time. Though Nilsson (1460 – 1512) initially supported the reigning king John of Denmark, he participated in the efforts to overthrow the monarch, which led to Sweden renouncing him as king in 1501. Nilsson was named the Regent of Sweden, and despite members of the Privy Council's objections ruled Sweden until his death in 1512. Svante Nilsson was more than a politician, though; he was also a warrior, a fact made clear by the sword that he used. Buried with him in his tomb was an elegant yet functional sword that is here reproduced by our shop, and one of the most unique swords to be recovered from the late medieval period. A curved S guard provides protection for the hands while also appearing very distinctive. The pommel's unusual flared design rounds out a sword that comfortably straddles the line between elegance and functionality.
