The nodachi or odachi is a legendary sword from Japanese history. The nodachi meaning "field sword" has also been referred to as the odachi meaning "large sword". The nodachi was designed for use against cavalry by Japanese foot soldiers in open field engagements. The length of the nodachi made their use in close quarters difficult, limiting them strictly to open field warfare. Today the nodachi has often seen in anime, manga and video games.
